About the MOT

When do you need an MOT? – Vehicles aged 3 years or more are required by law to have an MOT test every 12 months, it is a safety check to ensure the vehicle meets the minimum legal safety standards and levels of exhaust emissions set out by the DVSA.

How soon can you have an MOT? – You can present your vehicle for test up to 30 days in advance of the expriory date (shown on your current MOT certificate). You will still keep the same renewal date. For example, if your MOT expires on the 17th March, the soonest you can have an MOT is the 18th Feb, you can have an MOT sooner but the renewal date for the following year will be different.

Has your MOT expired? – You can’t drive your vehicle on the road if the MOT has expired, you could be prosecuted if caught. The only exceptions to drive it are, to or from somewhere to be repaired, to a pre-arranged MOT test. You can be fined up to £1000 for driving without a valid MOT.

If your vehicle FAILS the MOT – YOU MUST NOT drive your vehicle on the road if it fails the MOT test, even if your current MOT has not expired. The only exceptions to drive it are:
to or from somewhere to be repaired, to a pre-arranged MOT test. In both cases your vehicle still needs to meet the minimum standards of roadworthiness at all times or you can be fined up to £2,500, be banned from driving and get 3 penalty points for driving a vehicle in a dangerous condition.

MOT Retest – Once your vehicle has been repaired, it will need to be retested. In some cases your vehicle will only need a partial re-test and no fee will apply, a full list of retestable items can be found here.

MOT Test result appeals – You can appeal an MOT test failure or complain to the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency if you think your vehicle should have passed the MOT.
